It’s no secret, the Boston is known as one of America’s most beautiful cities. The history, The architecture, and charming neighborhoods add to the attraction. But Boston is also known as one of the most walk able cities with easy access to secret alleyways, eye-catching courtyards, and lovely corridors. While I have a long list of Boston streets that I recommend to photograph, here the top five prettiest streets to photograph in the winter. These five streets in particular, make for a perfect winter afternoon walk, because they are located relatively close together, making it easier to endure a cold New England Day.
Boston Street #1: Charles Street
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Charles Street as it runs right in between Boston Common and the Boston Public Garden. Charles Street is also the heart of Beacon Hill. While both parks have scenes to photograph for days, there’s something exceptional in walking through the public garden under a fresh coat of snow. It makes you feel as if you’re in a real life snow globe. The Boston Public Garden was established in 1837, and is America’s first public botanical garden. The Public Garden features the equestrian statue of George Washington, along with the suspension bridge that contrasts the snow beautifully. These two parks that are surrounded by tall urban views of the city along with historical brownstones.
Boston Street #2: Acorn Street
The most noteworthy street in this list is Acorn Street. Dubbed as one of America’s most beautiful streets, this is Boston most photographed cobblestone alley. With a single vintage American flag, situated on a soft sloping hill, this darling back street looks stunning in any season. Acorn Street sits in the middle of the Beacon Hill neighborhood. It’s known for still having original Federal and Greek Revival Victorian architecture structures. With a slight dusting of snow it appears to be a scene right out of the Hallmark channel. Not only is this a lovely Street to photograph, but it’s special because it’s one of the last places in Boston to have original cobblestone in the street. Early Boston soil was rattled with cobblestones, and most settlers extracted them in order to have smoother roads. Definitely worth a visit….every time you are in the city.
Boston Street #3: Lime Street
This quaint little alley street is one of my secret favorites, located around the corner from one of my favorite coffee shops – Tatte Bakery. Every Door is dressed to impress during each holiday season. And don’t let the small entryways fool you. There are some spectacularly large brownstones that reside on this adorable lane.
Boston Street #4: Commonwealth Avenue
Another well known street in Boston is Commonwealth Avenue. Often compared to Paris boulevards, the parkway is divided in the center by a wide grassy mall. On either side you are treated to views of spectacular row homes. And throughout the center of the mall are statues, and memorials recognizing some great Boston moments throughout history. This boulevard is a treat any time of year but it’s particularly magical when the trees are lined with snow and makes you feel like you’re strolling through a winter wonderland.
Boston Street #5: Marlborough Street
Just one block over is Marlborough Street running directly parallel to from the Commonwealth Avenue. This quiet little street has spectacular doorways and tree lined brick sidewalks. It’s full of delightfully decorated porch stoops showcasing how stunning the homes are. It’s a perfect walk any time of the year, but with a coffee in hand on a cold winter day it is most particularly beautiful.
