In the heart of Boston is the beautifully appointed Boston Public Garden. It is actually America’s first botanical garden. There are many paths to walk through, a pond that holds swan boats in the summer time, and numerous trees and flowers. And today I’m going to give you the Boston Public Garden Tour as part of my Boston in Bloom series!
In fact, each year as spring starts to dawn on the city hundreds of tulips that have been meticulously planted pop up around the garden. They add bright pops of color that contrast the tranquil pond, and the different varieties of trees beginning to bud. The tulips surround the George Washington Monument, and they line the walkway to the footbridge. There are gardens and gardens of these bright bulbs in a variety of colors and people flock to the garden to celebrate the warm{ish} spring weather!
Some Fun Facts about the Boston Public Garden:
+ Every year in early May the Mayor of Boston hosts a small ceremony to welcome back the two resident swans: Romeo and Juliet. They winter at the Franklin Zoo.
+ The garden is 24 acres and was established in 1837
+ The Swan boats have been in working order since 1877
+ Mallard Island sits in the middle of the lagoon and was named after a children’s story “Make way for the ducklings”.
+ In 1987 a statue of Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings was put in the entrance of the Charles Street Gate and they are headed in the direction of the lagoon. The neighbors dress Mrs. Mallard and all of the ducklings up for all sorts of events!
+ A large Japanese lantern sits on the shore of the lagoon and was gifted to the garden by a well known Japanese antique dealer. Later the lantern was restored and replaced in Japanese fashion on a natural stone base. The stone base is from a quarry in Rockport, MA.
The Boston Public Garden tour is something everyone should take on their trip to Boston, and the residents of Boston take great pride in keeping this park exceptionally pristine and beautiful!
