After spending an evening in Boston’s iconic Fairmont Copley Plaza it’s hard to deny Boston’s inexplicable lure. A city with rich history, savory cuisine, and an air of sophistication that invites you in, and then charms you with its charismatic character.
From the moment you step into the Fairmont Copley Plaza your eyes are rewarded with soaring ceilings, all coffered and gilded. Hand laid mosaic tile, Italian marble columns and Waterford crystal chandeliers are everywhere. From a time when grand opulence was not only valued but expected.
As you peruse your way down peacock alley your imagination will come to life with visions of beautiful Bostonian socialites strolling through the elegant hallway. Enjoying an age when everyone knew the waltz, and tea dances were the tradition.
While making your way through the 5,000 square foot lobby, ask for a peek into the Venetian room. An extravagant room with dripping crystal lights, and decadent mirrored walls, a delight to see. However, to the left, you will notice one mirrored section slightly off. It was behind this mirror, that only the elite Bostonians came to grab a secret drink during the prohibition era.
After you drop your bags in one of the Fairmont’s classic appointed rooms, head down to Oak Long Bar + Kitchen. Sip on a handcrafted cocktail, or try a couple of delicious bites from a well-prepared farm to table menu. While relaxing with a drink enjoy the ambiance of the 30ft ceilings, the fireplace behind the bar, and the cozy booths representative of an old extravagant cigar lounge.
All of these luxurious features drew the most dapper of patrons such as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, and John F. Kennedy. In fact, it was JFK’s grandfather, John “Honey-Fitz” Fitzgerald, cut the ribbon when the hotel first opened in 1910. He was also the Mayor of Boston at the time!
