With over 700 acres of Vermont countryside, Basin Harbor is a mecca for good old-fashioned family fun. A place where kids run free, families eat dinner together, and friends forage long-lasting relationships. Family owned and run since 1886 ~ the family tradition runs strong here. There is so much to do at this resort that a week is not nearly enough to experience this New England gem. And here are five reasons to prove it is the best New England Family destination.
1. The Location
As if being located in Vermont wasn’t enough, Basin Harbor resides on the shores of Lake Champlain. With sweeping views of the Adirondack mountains across the way, Basin Harbor also offers boat tours which will give you a history of the lake, along with some up-close views of the gorgeous Palisades. A 100ft rock wall, that continues to plunge into the lake another 140 feet. Also, the sunsets are gorgeous over the lake! Just check the video below!
2. The Cottages
Besides having 47 guest rooms they have 77 individual cottages – perfect for families to all stay under one roof. The cottages were built in the 1920’s and 30’s. The owner actually asked Basin Harbor guests to design floor plans, and then built the cottages according to the plans. These charming cottages have all undergone renovations to keep up with the times.
3. The Food
Lets be real, food is a big deal. To go on vacation and get delicious meals all week is icing on the cake with all the other great amenities offered here. If you are looking for a casual bite swing into the Red Mill Restaurant located on Basin Harbor’s airfield. That’s right, people fly their private planes to enjoy this outdoor haven. Or to enjoy a classic family night out you can dine in the formal dining room. Either way, you won’t be disappointed!
4. The Outdoor Activities
If you love being outside then this is the place for you. You can golf, or just rent a golf cart to explore the property. You can bike, or grab a canoe. Basin Harbor recently built the Boat Club that offers a swimmers dock, with giant floating trampolines, and added lounge areas. The Boat Club is perfect for boaters coming in for the day or spend nights! There are over 50 miles of trails to explore as well. So many different ways to spend your days outside.
5. The Staff
From the moment I got there, I felt as if I was part of the family. They remembered my name, were gracious, fun, and more than willing to help with anything I needed. They have affectionately dubbed themselves the “Dirty Dancing” resort of New England, and I love it. In fact, I want to put my resume in for next summer. It’s like a summer camp….where you get paid. Does it get any better?
With all of these amenitities how can you not make Basin Harbor your New England family destination?

Your photos are lovely! I’ve never been to Vermont before, but can certainly agree with your Top 5. When we vacation we love to stay in places that are more like the Cottages you shared – something with charm!
