When I first got the phone call from Charlotte about meeting her in Hawaii my response was immediately “When? I’m there.” Since I was already aware there was a North Shore Shark dive my next question to was “So this means you and Ursula are going to go shark diving with me?” To which she promptly responded….
“Hell NO”
After the initial shock wore off, the idea grew on them, and they started asking the usual questions ~
will they bite me?-no
what kind of sharks? – Galapagos, Sand AND if we are lucky – a Tiger (we were not lucky)
how big? – anywhere from 6-12ft
how can you be 100% sure they wont bite me? – well, in all honesty I can’t, they are wild animals.
That response had them hold out on saying yes to the shark dive until ONE week before we were to meet in Hawaii.
But they did! And they loved it~ I don’t know if they loved the experience or the fact that they were still alive, but I’m willing to say it was the experience. P.S. they made TWO goodbye videos. Hysterical.
Interested in other shark dives besides the North shore shark dive? Check out this one in South Africa, or this one in Roatan!
We met up with Hawaii Adventure Diving early in the morning and headed out. God bless Charlotte and Ursula – they both get motion sickness, and the swells were really high that day….but they stuck with it! Besides the swells, it was a gorgeous out. Our guide Nick was incredibly informative about the sharks in the area and how they would act. Typical safety procedure. Great guy! You can check him out on instagam @TheScubaBum – he has some amazing underwater snaps of the Hawaiian marine life!
Nick explained we were going to free dive in a fishing boat route. So the sharks are used to the sounds of the boats and try to scarf up any scraps the fishermen threw overboard. Because of this there was no need to chum. We were able to see multiple sharks, with a couple large Galapagos! They were slightly stand offish (more so than other sharks I had seen on dives) but still a terrific experience! I’ve only done my shark dives with Matt…so to experience it with a couple of my girlfriends was so much fun!
OH! and what I hadn’t planned on? The humpback whales singing. We were able to see a couple jump on our way back too! Although unexpected, it was beautifully unforgettable.
Too much of a scaredy cat to hope in without a cage? Don’t worry… Hawaii Adventure Diving gives you the option…dive in the comfort zone of the cage….or leave the boring routine zone and free dive with this majestic creatures!! The North Shore shark dive should definitely be added to your bucket list!
Thanks for reading!

Look beautiful and peaceful underwater. I thought you were going inside a cage or something like that. But, I see this is a different kind of experience. #TPThursday
