On the northeastern shore of Maui is the infamous Road to Hana. A 56 mile stretch full of lush verdant tropical forest with hidden waterfalls that would thrill any adventure seeker. The Road to Hana starts out in Paia and almost immediately turns into a daunting tour as the lanes narrow and the 600 some curves become more intimidating as the drive goes on. Most people stop at mile marker 32 – Waianapanapa State park – where you can hike through lava tubes and experience the velvet smooth black sand beaches. It is not recommended to go the full 56 miles due to unpaved roads, mudslides, and signs stating to “honk” before going around the bend, however my friends and I aren’t quitters, and driving the back Road to Hana was full of excitement. If heading to Maui put this adventure on your list with plenty of time to explore!
