The best culinary finds are always in the most inconspicuous spots. You know the ones…off the beaten path, not located in an urban area, nothing flashy to acknowledge a restaurant even exists in an unassumed location. But the food, well the food begs a different story.
Upon walking into Captain Kat’s Lobster Shack you’re instantly charmed by the atmosphere with decor heavily influenced by the local culture. A live lobster tank full of the tasty crustaceans sits below a wall listing off all the delectable lobster dishes, and regional fresh seafood that Captain Kat’s offers.
It’s little wonder that savory lobster dishes dominate the menu with Captain Kat’s Lobster Shack located in the Lobster Capital of Canada – Barrington, Nova Scotia.
Lobster is a way of life in this town and at Captain Kat’s Lobster Shack it shows.

Collectively the table decided to order a variety of the lobster dishes. We tried lobster fondue, lobster rangoons, lobster poutine, creamed lobster (a South Nova Scotian specialty), and the lobster chowder. While I could have polished off the lobster poutine all by myself, I had to hold back for the main event: the steamed lobster fresh out of the cold waters of Barrington.
I’ve been eating lobster my entire life…my family owns a home on the coast of Maine. A summer home has been in the family for five generations, and we have been getting our lobster from the same local fisherman the entire time. I can clean a lobster with the best of them.
So, the Nova Scotian lobster had a high standard to live up to. And wow…did they deliver. Captain Kats Lobster Shack had the lobster perfectly steamed so the meat slid right out of the claws. I’m not sure if it’s the colder water, or what the lobsters are eating but these lobsters bring the flavor. These lobster tails have a burst of sweetness that you don’t even need to add melted butter.
Is there a huge flavor difference between Maine and Canadian Lobster? It’s a tough call, but I can say that any lobster dish you choose from Captain Kats Lobster Shack will live up to all of your lobster expectations.
On your way out be sure to stop by the lobster tank and say “Hi” to Lucy the Lobster Lucy tells Nova Scotians how much more winter to expect, just like Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog.
