We recently spent 3 days exploring the cutest coastal town: Newport, Rhode Island. Besides all of the historical homes, the Newport Mansions, and beautiful drives along the coast Newport has some great little spots to grab some food! We had our breakfasts at The Attwater Hotel which serves up a fun tapas style breakfast bar that changes every morning! Here are some great places that make our list for the Newport Rhode Island Food Guide, and some that are on our list for our next trip!
Coffee Shop:
This cute little coffee shop has great coffee and tea lattes. Of course they have the usual cafe baked goods, but it was the tea lattes that really impressed me. Give the nutcracker latte or the red velvet latte a go for something different!

Lunch:
This bar was packed at 2 in the afternoon. Full of bar patrons enjoying great craft beers and glasses of wine, but we were there for the oysters. And this place delivers. They serve up some of New England’s best oysters and if we had time we could have sat there all afternoon dining on oysters and pairing them with a dry rosé or white wine.
You’ll find this historical lunch spot along the docks of Newport’s Bannisters Wharf. It has a nautical theme and the owners keep it updated and maintained while keeping to the traditions of years gone by. If you are looking for a classic New England clam chowder than this is the place to be. The best clam chowder I’ve had to date. During lunch I watched as everyone sat down and started with this delicious “chowdah”.
Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant:
Sometimes you just want a good ole american hamburger. And Brick Alley delivers. Not only do they have a badass burger, but go ahead and splurge and try their nachos. Worth it.
Dinner:
I’m a sucker for a trendy little wine bar, so it was no surprise that the first night in Newport we found ourselves at Fluke. Also located on the historic Bannister’s Wharf, this cozy little wine bar serves up big flavor. Most notably the crispy oysters served with a mango pepper relish and red chilli mayo, the nailed it with this appetizer!
Stoneacre is relatively new to the Newport restaurant scene having opened just 6 months ago. Its a visually beautiful modern neighborhood restaurant where they source all of their meats from local farmers. We enjoyed a couple well crafted cocktails and ordered basically every appetizer they had while enjoying good conversation with the bartender. The kale salad was a huge hit, along with the mushroom toast. This trendy spot with a bit of hipster flare was a winning combination for a delicious dinner!
This place was my favorite spot in Newport! Not only because it is the oldest tavern in America, but because the food was just that good. We had an appetizer – the Duck Scotch Egg that blew us away. I moved on to the Narragansett Bay Bouillabaisse. Absolute perfection. Matt had the crispy duck – he always gets duck – and claimed it was one of his favorite duck meals he has had! Great wine list, great service, great history. Go!
On the List for the Next Visit:
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner? Yup, you guessed it – this place is all the fried chicken goodness. Matt is a HUGE fried chicken lover and this menu made his heart sing, so it is definitely at the top of the list for the next visit.
So we actually tried to go to grab a lobster roll here (I have a love affair with New England lobster rolls), BUT they weren’t open yet. I believe they will be opening up in the next couple weeks, but you bet I will be back to try one of these rolls!!
Malt:
Malt is located on Broadway which is a known as the street the locals like to hang out on, seeing as Thames is always packed with tourists. Malt is a vintage style tavern with over 30 beers and great bar food. Great for a casual night out!
