This fall was my first visit to the Berkshires, and it won’t be my last! This rural region in western Massachusetts is a popular vacation destination in New England thriving with museums, theaters, farm-to-table restaurants, luxury hotels, and an incredible arts scene! I stayed at the Seven Hills Inn, a historical inn in Lenox that was recently renovated into a luxurious modern boutique style Inn.
The Seven Hills Inn sits on 27 acres of acres of lush gardens and trails, and even has an outdoor pool for the warm summer days. There are 57 stylish suites between the Manor House, Carriage House, and Terrace House. I stayed in the Manor House in a spectacular suite with the most magnificent updated bathroom.
Even though the Inn has gone through modern updates the traditional character still holds true with touches like the claw foot tub, mouldings, original stair case and fire places.
Originally built as a farm house in the mid-1700’s, it became one of the first “Berkshire Cottages” in 1885 under the ownership of Robert Chapin. In 1904 another Berkshire Cottage was built next door by the popular novelist – Edith Wharton. It wasn’t until 1911 when Bostonian Emily Meredith Reed Spencer took over the Seven Hills Inn property that the place came to life.
Emily had the entire stair case imported piece by piece from England. The two grand fireplaces on the first floor were imported from France, and the columns in the living room came from Italy. Emily also doubled the size of the mansion, and let her beloved piglet rosie run wild amongst the property.
It wasn’t until the 1950’s the the mansion became in an, when 2 New Yorkers took it over. During the most recent renovations the contractors found original blue prints from when Emily owned the cottage. The blue prints are now hanging proudly in the main hall.
I spent my days exploring the Berkshires, driving through the villages, hiking trails and photographing waterfalls. I would have early dinners – you must go to Frankies – and in the evenings I would enjoy back at the Seven Hills Inn sitting by the bonfires and roasting marshmallows, or enjoying the grand fireplaces inside.
While my activities were mostly outside because of the fall foliage I need to go back to experience the incredible art scene. There is the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Clark Art Institute, and the Norman Rockwell Museum. There is also a wide variety of highly acclaimed restaurants, and we all know how seriously I take my food!
This is truly one of the most scenic areas in Massachusetts and easily accessible from Boston, Southern Vermont, Upstate NY, and even NYC.
