New England is full of incredible Bed and Breakfast’s affectionately known as B&B’s. Most of these B&Bs are old homes, all with great historical stories, that have been renovated in modern times to provide travelers with a home away from home experience. The Four Chimney’s Inn is the ultimate example of a traditional New England Bed and Breakfast.
The first time I visited Vermont I saw the Four Chimney’s Inn – A sprawling white home with elegantly manicured grounds, and four tall brick chimneys. I knew instantly I wanted to experience this beautiful destination, and explore everything that Bennington had to offer.
Dating back to the late 18th century the original building was home to the town Pastor. The mansion turned out to be too much for the Reverend so he ended up selling the property to Nathanial Brush, who then turned it into a general store and boarding house.
Sadly the mansion burned to the ground in 1910. A wealthy business man Philip B. Jennings saw potential in the Old Bennington location and built a summer home on the remaining foundation. The Jennings family lived there on and off until Philip’s death in 1949. The home was then turned into a fine dining establishment with many famous visitors such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Walt Disney, just to name a few.
Finally, the Four Chimneys Inn was purchased in 2005 by its current owners Lynn and Pete, who kept all of the historical charm while transforming it into one of Vermont’s most iconic B&Bs. The roomy suites all contain modern amenities while keeping up with the old New England Charm. Beautiful moulding, intricate lighting with period furniture pieces provide a relaxing at home feeling. The beds are incredibly comfortable with luxuriously soft sheets, making you look forward to turning in.
Lynn, who is a phenomenal chef, creates incredible home cooked meals each morning with wonderfully fresh roasted coffee. After fueling up on breakfast it’s time to head out and explore Bennington. This small town has so much to offer and I wrote all about it in 15 Top Things to Do in Bennington VT, a Complete Travel Guide. At the end of your day head back to the Inn and enjoy a night cap in front of the fire.
The Four Chimneys Inn is one of New England’s best experiences. From its location in Bennington, the incredibly kind innkeepers Lynn and Pete, the elegant suites, and the cozy charm of the Inn all make this a premiere Vermont destination!
