When I boarded the ferry to head to Martha’s Vineyard I had no idea what to expect. What I found was an intriguing Island lifestyle that made me reminisce on my summers spent in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.

A laid-back vibe with cool casual style. Adorable beach homes with cedar shake siding and white picket fences. Everyone you pass says hello and smiles in greeting. No chain restaurants, but instead family-owned businesses with creative chefs. The cobblestone streets lined with brick paved walkways just elevate the charm.

The shopping in Edgartown is also magical with fully decked out storefront windows, boutique shops, and local artisans. You can even visit the first Vineyard Vines store. This New England brand was started by two brothers who were sick of the corporate world, so they decided to start selling ties out fo their boat amongst Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Cape Cod.

During my visit to the Vineyard, I stayed at the Kelley House, which was built in 1742! Updated to offer al the best modern amenities, this place was every bit as darling as Martha’s Vineyard itself. The Newes From America Pub, apart from the hotel, is a real gem offering American pub fare with the historical ambiance. If you are lucky you’ll get to chat with a couple of old salty fishermen after their hard days work. They can regale you with stories of the Vineyard for as long as you have time. The rooms at the Kelley House are bright and spacious, inviting you in to relax and enjoy the vacation. My room came with a large deck overlooking the Harbor and was the perfect stop for my cup of coffee each morning. It’s also within walking distance to all the sights that Edgartown offers.

I did take a day away from Edgartown because Martha’s Vineyard is quite large. On the other side of the island, I went flying the drone over Aquinnah Cliffs, and the Gay Head Light. The sunset here is outstanding!  Watch the sun move across the sky while being surrounded by water on three sides. Make sure you stop by the Menemsha Fishmarket, open year round. This small fish market doesn’t look like much but don’t let that fool you. They have the biggest lobsters I’ve ever seen in their freshwater open tanks and their lobster rolls are one of the best tasting rolls in New England. And I take my lobster rolls very seriously. If you get a chance you should also go to Island Alpaca. It’s an alpaca farm and they sell the softest Alpaca accessories to keep you warm. If you are lucky a happy, friendly alpaca will hang out with you.

Martha’s Vineyard has so much to offer and Kelley House is the place to make your home base while exploring this perfect New England Island.
