What makes a luxury hotel luxurious? I can assure you the answer lies in a privately owned, quiet corner, on the shore of South Lake Tahoe.
I’ve stayed in some amazing 5-star resorts: the Four Seasons in Sydney, The Ritz Carlton in San Francisco, an extravagant safari lodge that sat in the middle of a South African game reserve, but The Landing Resort and Spa caught me off guard. This small resort of 88 rooms packs a punch by wooing the savvy traveler with astounding amenities; a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, a fitness gym with a state of the art sauna, a relaxing spa, a board room for meetings with a lake view, a 3,600 sq. foot roof top terrace with a fireplace overlooking the deep blue Lake Tahoe, an award winning restaurant, private beach access, and a staff that is worthy of serving the Queen of England.
Upon pulling up to the resort you are instantly greeted by the valet, who is eager unload your luggage and park your car as you check in. Walking through the front door you notice a cozy lobby of contemporary European furnishings with two desks, versus the usual check-in counter. Almost immediately you are handed a refreshing glass of champagne as you still try and take in the fact that you are indeed in Lake Tahoe, and not an upscale British lounge. After you have been handed your room key the valet reappears to take you and your belongings to your room, chatting away about the lovely owners of the hotel, the activities, and all that awaits you at the charming Landing Resort.
Every room at The Landing has a balcony, a stone surround gas fireplace, and a 55 inch flat screen t.v. A sitting area that consists of two oversize plush leather chairs with vibrant plaid seat cushions is strategically placed in front of the fire place, which you control with a remote. The dark wood floors lead your way to the granite wet bar with your own keurig, mini refrigerator, sink, and my personal favorite, your choice of red or white wine. The beds have custom headboards with welcoming white deluxe bedding complimented by soft, downy pillows with a flannel throw completing the ultimate look of mountain comfort.
Then there is the bathroom. An exquisite ensemble of marble floors, a deep set jetted tub with views of your large t.v., heated towel rack, double sink vanity, adjustable radiant flooring, an over sized steam shower with a waterfall shower head , and a heated toilet seat. You can also enjoy the brand named toiletries by L’Occitane. In most 5 star resorts you would only find this dream bathroom in the higher end rooms, but The Landing makes these luxuries available in every single guest room.
Ready to eat? No worries this remarkable resort also comes with an award winning restaurant ~ Jimmy’s. You can enjoy a revitalizing cocktail at the bar with a back-lit onyx wall, or on the outdoor patio overlooking the exquisite lake during happy hour, while live musicians lull your senses into vacation mode. For the main meal grab a seat at one of their private tables in an alcove with your own fire place. Maria Elia, a highly recognized chef from England designed the wood fired Greek inspired cuisine. Local fresh produce with high quality seafood cultivate a menu full of flavor. Choosing a wine to go with your dinner should be no problem with a global wine list of over 250 labels from their glass enclosed wine cellar. My favorite meal: the burrata salad with fresh tomatoes, oxblood micro-greens and their in house balsamic reduction, with petite filet mignon cooked to perfection with seasonal wild mushrooms, a bleu cheese butter, and potato gratin, complimented by the luscious Wing Canyon, cabernet sauvignon from Mt. Veeder, California.
Recently voted #1 for top resorts in Northern California by Conde’s Nest Traveler, this admired establishment is the place to stay in South Lake Tahoe. In fact, it’s the only place you should consider in all of Tahoe. Close to numerous trails, Heavenly ski resort, and exciting casinos, it doesn’t take much to fill your time with entertaining activities to make this a world class getaway.
