This was a great reading year for me! I read the entire Harry Potter series (first time ever!) along with some other magnificent fiction, along with the not so great books, and I even started listening to more business books. Some of you requested a monthly review on what I’ve read, which is coming, and others wanted the top 10 books I read in 2019. So without further ado:
Top 10 Books I Read in 2019:
Shoe Dog
This book is all about Phil Knight and how he started Nike. It was a long road with a lot of setbacks, almost bankruptcies, competition, and brilliant ingenuity – but what entrepreneur hasn’t experienced these things?
Three Women
The Nonfiction that reads like fiction. Author Lisa Taddeo spent a decade following 3 different women’s stories and their sexuality. All I can say is WOW. These stories cover all the range of emotions in a way that makes you feel compassionate towards their struggles. A MUST READ.
American Predator
I’m a huge thriller/crime/horror fan. In fact I could literally live on reading thrillers alone. Until I read American Predator. This real life story based off of one of America’s smartest yet most disturbing serial killers ate me alive inside. It was so painfully well written that I was disturbed to the point I only read romantic comedies for 2 months after. Any book that has that kind of lasting effect is definitely a winner.
The Hating Game
This was the first romantic comedy I read while trying to recover from American Predator. I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it, but I actually LOVED it! It was cute, funny, heartwarming and a feel good quick read.
The Idea of You
Ok, so this book WRECKED ME, I mean I just wanted to shut myself off from the world when this book ended. The story is about a 40 year old woman who falls for a 21 year old rock star. Sounds a little crazy right? Well the author Robinne Lee creates characters that are so captivating that you WANT them to live happily ever after….
Building a Story Brand
This is another must read business book. Donald Miller breaks down how owning a business is not enough anymore, there has to be a story behind the brand, and how essential this is for customers in a day of technology and consumerism. Your story is what will make you stand out!
We Came Here to Forget
A story about a young olympic skater who loses everything and runs away to Buenos Aires, where it seems many expats go to forget their lives. While running she is forced to uncover some demons from her past that she always tried to outrun by skiing, but it all catches up to you in the end.
Where the Crawdad’s Sing
The prose in this book is so beautiful and melodic it is near impossible to put down. An abandoned girl grows up in rural North Carolina. This coming of age story is brought to life through the descriptive writing of Delia Owens that you feel as if you are right there with Kayla, watching the birds in the Carolina marsh.
Normal People
Sally Rooney weaves a powerful tale of friendship that turns to love and takes twists and turns along the way. Connell and Marianne try to stay away from each other but year after year they keep finding their way back.
Daisy Jones & The Six
I don’t say this often – however you HAVE to listen to this on audible. It is read by an entire cast of actors and it comes to life. This incredible story is done in a documentary style, even though its fiction, and does a fantastic job of painting a picture of what it was like during America’s drugs, sex and rock n’ roll time period. If you take any one book from this list – make it this one!
