Check out this video of Fall in Vermont:
One of my favorite things about Vermont, besides the fall foliage, is how small it is. It is incredibly easy for visitors to see as much, or as little, of this glorious state as they want. The back roads of Vermont hold some of America’s most beautiful scenes. Huge red barns, horse farms, sloping hills, country stores, and of course the colorful fall foliage. So here is a list of the 5 best scenic drives in Vermont for all the leaf peepers!
Top 5 Best Scenic Drives in Vermont in the Fall:
1. Route 100
Route 100 is probably the most well known of Vermont’s scenic drives, and it is the longest. Without stops it takes about 5 hours to complete. It starts in Northern Massachusetts (Clarksburg) and travels all the way to the top of the state. Full of mountain valleys and white church steeples making it well worth the long trek.
2. Mad River Byway
I’m particularly partial to the mad river byway. It starts in Middlesex, VT and ends in Buels Gore, VT. This route takes you through famous ski areas, rugged farms, quaint downtowns, and along mountain ridges giving you spectacular leaf peeping views.
3. Molly Stark Byway
Named after the wife of General Stark who won the battle at Bennington in 1777, this route is full of villages with history and arts made for exploring on cool fall days. You start in Brattleboro and take Route 9 to Bennington. The trip also takes you through the Green Mountain National Forest.
4. The Shires of VT Byway
This scenic drive starts in Pownal and ends in Manchester. The vistas on this route are known for influencing the likes of Ethan Allen, Robert Frost, and Norman Rockwell; defintely making it one of the best scenic drives in Vermont! It’s only 30 miles and is a great addition to the Molly Stark Byway.
5. Stone Valley Byway
You can continue on from Manchester and take the Stone Valley Byway up to Hubbardton. This route will take you through one of my favorite New England towns: Dorset VT. Be sure to take time to walk the village green and pop into Dorset rising for a delicious coffee and one of Vermont’s best cider donuts.
While this is my list of the top scenic drives in Vermont nearly any back road you take in this state will be sure to give you all the American feels. Enjoy and be sure to let me know your favorites!
