Sadly, this month was a super slow month for reading for for my wine and books! I had my hands full of projects and work I needed to get off my plate, however the four February Books I did read were still great!
February Wine and Books
The Stranger – 4/5 Stars
By Harlan Coben
Best Paired With Layer Cake Primitivo: full of black berries, spice, nuances of fresh earth, the Layer Cake Primitivo is a beautifuly textured wine that holds up to a hearty meal, or plot line…
I flew threw this book. And then I got hit with the flu and devoured the Netflix series. The two completely different story lines with only a few similarities, and surprisingly I couldn’t tell you which I liked more.
It all starts with a stranger approaches Adam Price with a dark secret about his wife Corinne. As it turns out the stranger has been telling a lot of secrets and we all know some things should just stay hidden….
This was my first Harlan Coben book and I already have a more waiting in my amazon cart because it was such an enjoyable read!
The Lost City of the Monkey God – 4/5 Stars
By Douglas Preston
Best Paired With Grgich Hills Chardonnay: a glorious chardonnay that isn’t masked by overly oak or vanilla tones. Instead it boasts bright lemon and orange aromas, with a freshness and minerality to balance it out.
I picked this book up at Barnes and Nobles. It has a real life Indiana Jones adventure feel to it and I thought I would love it. And I did, mostly….
This book is set up in 3 parts – Part 1 consists of a glimpse in to Honduras’ history, along with all of the legends about a lost city. Many professionals had given up hope this city existed however because we are in the 21st century how have we NOT found it. It weaves in government history, along with folklore of people who have found it, and why the Hondurians believe it to be cursed.
Part 2. Consists of a team of scientists using new technology and actually locating the city. But it’s not as easy as it sounds because the Hondurian Rain Forests are thick with poisonous snakes, jaguars, drug cartels, and the terrain in general is a nightmare. The book also discusses the legal, and not so legal ways, they had to go around the Honduras government to get to the Lost City.
Part 3. This is where things got crazy and scared the hell out of me. Ill leave it at that.
All in all I found this book to be fascinating, I love a non-fiction adventure story that has to do with anything historical!
The Last Unicorn – 4/5 Stars
By Peter S. Beagle
Best Paired With Schramsberg Cremant Demi-Sec: a bright bubbly that gives off aromas of pineapple and pear with flavors of vanilla and apple – a lovely magical combination that pairs well with a magical read.
So this book was an unexpected surprise! Who remember the OLD movie The Last Unicorn?? Well I for one loved it, however I had no idea it was actually a book!! So when I was wandering around the Amazon Prime book shop I saw it and immediately nabbed it!
A unicorn finds out she is the last of her species and sets down a dangerous path to discover what happened to all the other unicorns! She picks up some friends along the way; a not so magical magician, and an impossibly stubborn woman, Molly Grue.
It was a great read to go back down memory lane of one of my favorite childhood movies!
You Are Not Alone – 4.5/5 Stars
By Greer Hendricks and Sara Pekkanen
Best Paired With La Spinetta Barbera: a full bodied dry wine full of intensity and juicy fruit flavors! Enjoy while reading this juicy book by two of my favorite authors out!
A complex thriller about a girl who just wants to be loved and fit it. Of course that is never as easy as it sounds as she is taken in by the Moore sisters and her life starts becoming a tangled web of deceit!
