Recently I had the pleasure of experiencing the decadent Wentworth by the Sea located in New Castle, New Hampshire.  Known as the crown jewel of New Castle, this resort commands your attention. Its captivating charm, enticing menu, alluring decor all exemplify what a grand historic hotel should be.

The Wentworth was constructed in the 1870’s and still features the three original Victorian towers. It has been awarded the “Award of Excellence” by the American Institute of Architects. And the accolades don’t stop there…

This beauty is the only hotel in New Hampshire on the Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler lists of “Best Hotels in the US. It holds the AAA’s Four Diamond award and was also named #4 best hotel spa in America by Conde Nast Traveler readers in 2014.  The resort’s main restaurant, SALT Kitchen + Bar, was also awarded “Award of Excellence” by Wine Spectator.

 

This wasn’t always the case, the hotel was left abandoned for years after the gilded age. The hotel closed back in 1982 and even had a date with a wrecking ball. As a result the Wentworth by the Sea was put on the list of America’s most endangered places, and even made an appearance on the history channel trying to attract a buyer. Obviously, it worked.

Ocean Properties acquired the property in 1997, and after and extensive 6 year, $30 million dollar renovation, it reopened its doors in 2003. With 161 guest rooms, 18 with fireplaces, and each having all the modern amenities. Admittedly, the heated tile floors were my favorite.  In addition to the beautifully appointed rooms, there is also a plethora of activities available at the resort. Not only can you spend a day at the spa, you can go deep sea fishing, play a round of golf, play tennis, walk the immaculate property, or even go on a harbor cruise.

Within the Wentworth by the Sea is their famed restaurant SALT Kitchen + Bar. This restaurant has some of the most beautiful decor I’ve seen in a dining room. When you first walk in you lounge area with a piano in the corner. The stylish marble bar beckons you over for cocktails. And, just around the corner, you get a glimpse of the bright and airy open kitchen. Venturing furthing into the restaurant you come to your grand dining room with a dome intricately painted into the ceiling. The room is done in shades of white with pops of blue velvet, metal accents, and stylish seating. Finally, in the very back you’ll find a private dining space in their beautiful wine room.

Nine times out of ten I order the whatever the server recommends. At SALT the recommended meal was the beef tenderloin. The filet was seared to perfection and cooked exactly as I ordered. Presentation was lovely, and service was impeccable. I also strongly recommend the key lime pie, an upgraded version with strawberries that was delicious.

The Wentworth by the Sea is a stunning New England hotel.  It is a coastal destination not to be missed and includes everything you could ask for while providing you with a truly memorabe experience.  Besides its only an hours drive from Boston – how could you say no?
